GIM Mobility Monitoring: Current daily distances
January 4, 2021
How far do we currently travel per day? How does the Corona pandemic affect our mobility? And what are the differences between the different age groups?
The GIM Mobility Monitoring provides comprehensive data on these questions. It continuously tracks the mobility behavior of Germans during the Corona pandemic. The daily distances traveled can be an indicator of the current infection situation in real time.
The current data show: Germans significantly reduced their daily distances traveled over the Christmas holidays and New Year's Day, nearly cutting them in half. On January 1, 2021, the median "7-day average" of distances traveled was 5.8 km, which was even lower than the lowest value in 2020 (on March 27 with 6.4 km).

The development of the daily distances (median) in the 7-day average from February 2020 until 01.01.2021
Dr. Jörg Munkes explained in an interview on our corporate blog GIM Radar how a correlation between the daily distances traveled and the reproduction number (R-value) can be established on the basis of the GIM Traces data (click here to read; only available in German).
