GIM analytics again wins BVM Data Science Cup!

For the second time after 2018, GIM analytics Senior Director Data Science & Software Engineering, Dr. Sebastian Bönisch, has won the Data Science Cup of the BVM (Professional Association of German Market and Social Researchers).
The award honors Big Data experts who best solve given data analysis challenges under competitive conditions. Data Scientist Dr. Bönisch had already won the award in 2018, this year the prize was awarded for the fourth time in total.
This year, the BVM's cooperation partner was the ADAC (General German Automobile Club). Accordingly, the task for the award participants revolved around a mobility topic: the task was to develop an approach for modeling traffic on Bavarian Autobahns that can be applied to the analysis of roadworks-related traffic disruptions. The raw data basis consisted of about one billion "floating car" data sets from 2019 as well as information on road works from the road works information systems (BIS) of the German federal states.
Dr. Bönisch's analyses focused on the potential of "floating car" data for traffic modeling. His approach is based on combining classical theories and techniques of traffic modeling with modern methods of machine learning and geodata management. Traffic modeling based on conventional and new data sources is highly relevant to society.
GIM analytics Award Winner Dr. Sebastian Bönisch on his second victory: "Of course I am very excited that we have won the cup for the second time. It was a tricky, but also exciting task! The win is also a result of the investments GIM has made in the data science area over the past years".
The BVM organizes the competition, with technical support from the University of Technology Dresden and the ScaDS Dresden/Leipzig (Competence Center for Scalable Data Services and Solutions).
