FAQ - Car Clinics

A Car Clinic is a specialized form of automotive market research in which production or prototype vehicles are presented in a neutral, “clinical” environment under identical lighting, color, and display conditions, so that potential buyers can objectively compare and evaluate the vehicles in detail. The term is derived from the systematic examination conducted in a medical “clinic.”

Professionalism is of the utmost importance for the success of a Car Clinic. This includes understanding clients’ business challenges through industry expertise, the personal Car Clinic expertise of all project team members, and an excellent recruitment network. Experienced partners in the markets and a deep understanding of the target audience are also crucial.

A successful Car Clinic requires flawless organization and coordination of all elements—from recruitment and the creation of guidelines and questionnaires, through programming and methodology, to analysis and even the quality of the food served on-site. All aspects must work together seamlessly to achieve optimal results.

Car Clinics typically employ a combination of methodologies that include both qualitative and quantitative elements. In the past, clinics were often conducted using purely qualitative or quantitative methods, but today, integrating both approaches is standard practice. This integration ensures that all insights gathered are synthesized into a comprehensive overall picture. This applies to both the interview process and the reporting.

The result: reports that not only present qualitative and quantitative results side by side but also combine them into a comprehensive overall picture. An experienced project team is essential for this.

Clinics play a key role in the product development process by gathering direct feedback from potential customers. At prototype clinics, new products are physically displayed in a large hall, often alongside key competing products.

All vehicles are positioned at the same angle, in the same color, and with identical features and lighting to ensure comparability. Through structured discussions and targeted questions, developers and designers gain valuable insights that lead to optimized design decisions and technical adjustments before the product launch.

Participants evaluate exterior proportions, lighting signatures, the quality of materials and tactile feel in the interior, user interface concepts (UX/HMI), seating comfort and sense of space, technical features, and price/equipment packages—usually in direct comparison with 3–8 competing models from the same segment.

Our core responsibilities as market researchers include, in particular, providing methodological guidance and developing the study design in detail. This involves creating research instruments, analyzing data, and preparing reports. Logistical tasks are also central, such as finding and equipping suitable locations for product studies with the models and competing products to be displayed.

Reliably recruiting participants is a major challenge. Furthermore, security and discretion are of the utmost importance to ensure that no outsiders find out when and where the car clinics featuring secret products are taking place.

Car clinics require 100 percent confidentiality and therefore cannot be conducted online. Online, participants could take screenshots, and confidential designs or concepts could quickly become public, potentially causing billions in damages for manufacturers.

Furthermore, the products being tested are often emotionally charged, high-end, or luxury goods that test participants must experience physically. A hands-on experience is essential for a well-founded evaluation and cannot be replaced by images, online presentations, or virtual reality from the living room.

VR clinics are now widely used and, in many cases, offer a good alternative to physically displaying vehicles. They make it possible to present designs and concepts in an interactive and immersive way, which is particularly useful in early stages of development.

However, these studies are typically conducted as “real-world market research” with participants on-site to ensure a high level of safety. VR is not inherently better or more cost-effective than physical studies. While certain expenses may be eliminated, other costs—such as longer fieldwork periods—may arise. A general recommendation is therefore not possible; each project must be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

The term “clinic” originates from medical practice and refers to events where products are thoroughly examined and evaluated. At car clinics, vehicles or components are physically displayed in a clinical setting to ensure comparability.

All test subjects are displayed at the same angle, in the same color, and with identical equipment and lighting. This systematic and comparable presentation, similar to that in a medical clinic, gives the event its name.
